Leaving Poland
Every journey begins with a goodbye. Warsaw was home: the place where Luca and Mia grew up and watched the world from their favorite window. With everything packed, one final vet visit complete and their pet passports ready, they climbed into the car. The adventure had begun.

First Flight
Passports ready and carriers packed, Luca and Mia left Warsaw for their first flight. The airport brought a new rhythm: a little waiting, a little watching, and time to settle together before the flight to Hamburg.

All Aboard
Queen Mary 2 was waiting in Hamburg. From the first step at check-in to the special boarding area for passengers traveling with pets, Luca and Mia made their way aboard. On Deck 12, the kennel entrance offered a first look at their home at sea. Mom and Gammy found their stateroom, and evening arrived as the journey continued toward the Atlantic.

First Flight
October 25, 2026 · First Flight · Warsaw → Hamburg
We began in the LOT lounge at Warsaw Chopin Airport, where a quiet breakfast gave us time to settle before boarding. Then came the moment we had been preparing for: two carriers tucked safely beneath the seats, engines lifting us above Poland, and our first view of the world from the sky. A short flight carried us to Hamburg—but for us, it marked the beginning of a much larger journey.

While Mom stepped ashore for a day among Stonehenge, Salisbury, and Southampton’s medieval streets, Gammy stayed aboard with us. By evening, stories spanning thousands of years had found their way back to our little home at sea.

Queen Mary 2 — A Home at Sea
October 12, 2026 · Queen Mary 2 · North Atlantic
Aboard Queen Mary 2, Mom and Gammy settled into their stateroom while we settled into our neighboring kennels. Between visits, the Grand Lobby, open decks, and Atlantic views became part of the world we would all call home for the crossing.

After our first flight, Hamburg gave us a calm pause before boarding Queen Mary 2. The Alster, Rathaus, and Elbphilharmonie offered one last city view before our journey turned west.

Routines Make New Places Feel Familiar

Aboard Queen Mary 2, Luca and Mia shared two adjacent kennels opened into one space. Familiar bedding, meals and quiet moments helped give our days a rhythm. Bring a little of home, keep meals familiar, and give them time to settle.

Preparing for a Pet-Friendly Sea Crossing

Boarding Queen Mary 2 took more planning than a typical departure. We kept our documents within reach, confirmed the kennel reservation and check-in instructions, carried familiar bedding and essentials, and allowed extra time for the specialized pet handover. Arriving early and keeping documents separate from luggage helped the day feel calm and organized—from the terminal to our first look at our home for the crossing.

Planning a Calm Stopover With Dogs

After our first flight, Hamburg gave us the quiet pause we needed before boarding Queen Mary 2. We settled into a dog-friendly hotel, returned to familiar routines, and allowed time to rest between travel legs. Before booking a stopover, we confirm the hotel’s pet rules, locate nearby relief areas and an emergency veterinarian, and leave enough recovery time before the next departure. A short familiar walk, a quiet cafe, and an early night helped us feel ready for what came next.

About Luca & Mia Hix
Two miniature dachshunds.
One very big world.
Luca and Mia Hix were born in Poland on January 11, 2025. Luca is a gray-and-black merle; Mia is black and tan. Their travel diary follows the places they live, the routes between them, and the rituals that make each new home feel familiar.
We share each part of Luca and Mia Hix's journey after we've had time to enjoy the experience together, rather than trying to capture every moment as it happens. Luca and Mia Hix remain at the heart of the story, and as we meet new friends and family along the way, their stories come to life too.
